Before you hire anybody, ask

• Ask whether the quote covers tearing off the old roof or laying over it, and what happens if the decking underneath is rotten.
• Ask who pays for skip hire and disposal, and whether gutters and flashing are included.
• Ask whether your town needs a permit, and who applies for it.
• Ask to see their licence and insurance certificate, and check the names and dates.
