Before you hire anybody, ask

• Ask whether the quote is fixed or by the hour, and what happens if they find something unexpected behind a wall.
• Ask whether gas work, if any, is done by somebody qualified for it where you live.
• Ask to see their licence and insurance certificate, and check the names and dates.
