Before you hire anybody, ask

• Ask which trades are included — plumbing, electrical, plastering, tiling — and which you would need to arrange.
• Ask how allowances for cabinets and worktops are priced, and what happens if you choose something dearer.
• Ask to see their licence and insurance certificate, and check the names and dates.
